I am really fascinated to find out how common a problem this is and that there is such little help in this issue area.. I have legal guardianship of my 20 y/o daughter that has a laundry list of diagnosis's within the Mental Illness and Developmentally Disabled areas. We have resently become aware of her and a friend shoplifting where ever they go. Her so called friend is older and does not have the laundry list of illness's but says she has been diagnosed with "Bipolar with a shopping Disorder". I think it is more like "theft disorder", but as I am told "who am I to label". My daughter has always had a boundary problem and taken money from our home but never really went any further than that. She loves to give people things. I have also noticed her thefts have become broader and more frequent recently. I need help in order to help my daughter. I know She knows it is wrong but I don't think she comprehends the full extent of it being wrong. I am in a whirlwind of confusion as to how to help her (besides staying away from this person). Can you help me and show me the right direction. She is not capable of doing any part of this on her. HELP

Will you be opening up an online forum/message board for compulsive spenders/shoppers. I have searched the internet high and low and I can't find an active group except for Spenders Anonymous, which really isn't for me. Thanks for your time!
Amanda

I do not have a criminal history or received a speeding ticket even once, but I was caught shop lifting today for the first time. It was indeed a very embarassing and painful experience, in fact I did feel a sense of relief that this would curb my urge to do it again. Fortuanately for me no charges were pressed against me as it was my first time and I was spared the shame and disgrace it would inflict upon me and my family.I need help to stop this before it gets out of control. This blog is very inspiring as I can identify with the several disorders of obsessive compulsive behaviour. Please help.

Thank You for a great job. I am a person with a 15yr history of Mental Illness and I have tried approx 30 types of meds. I was recently rx'd Cymbalta 60mg to add to Zolft 200mg for my chronic Major Depression. While dazed and "confused" from what I believe was "Serotonin Syndrome" I was detained and arrested for shoplifting. I tried to explain to the Loss Prevention Staff and Police that I was Ill and having neg. reactions to meds, and that I needed EMS services to be called to the arrest scene, as I am aware that the local Police Dept. has a (CIT) Crisis Intervention Training program to deal with Menatlly Ill persons (like myself) who committed a crime or was involved in a car accident etc... I was denied medical treatement and taken straight to jail. This was my first "shoplifting arrest" I have been trying to find information on the internet on this subject, and I'm glad I came acrossed this site. I would appreciate and feedback or information, but NOT LEGAL ADVICE becuase I know that is not permitted. Please email me back.
